Having made a name for himself with Worship Central South Africa, Mark Counihan has released an album called 'To The Brave Ones'.
Opening with delicate synth sounds and a gentle guitar, 'Brave Ones' is a soothing song which quickly demonstrates Mark's vocal talents. The atmospheric percussion and varied vocal tones make this an engaging opener.

There's something not dissimilar to Ed Sheeran about Mark's voice, the effortless way he moves songs along with his singing, reaching highs and lows with ease, and with just enough of a catch in his vocals to fall somewhere between 'clean' and 'croaky' and give that sense of intrigue. In fact, if Ed did worship, I feel sure this album is what it would sound like.
I love the keyboard riff on 'The Light', very Coldplay, it starts the song off and then keeps going for much of the track. The additional effects and sounds that join in mid way, along with the soft backing vocals, all add up to a really 'big' sound that makes this an obvious stand out track.
Lyrically these songs contain worshipful themes but not in a ram it down your throat, kind of way. In 'Miles To Go' the chorus sings "I just want to seek you more, get closer to the Lord of all". And in 'Encore' Mark declares "Behold the King of Kings, behold the Lord of Lords, turn your eyes and stand in awe."
Many of these tracks have a real acoustic vibe, none more so than 'Streets' - just a man and his guitar, reflecting on his loving God. Closing song 'Cover Up' has a slightly more snappy feel, as the acoustic guitar is joined by a cool echoey beat and more Sheeran style vocal magic.
This is a worship album with a really modern style - not that electro-synth obsession that many bands are turning out at the moment, but the modern singer/songwriter style of strong vocals, crisp music and good quality songs that keep you coming back for more. Mark is someone to watch out for, and this set of songs will certainly appeal to many. I loved it.
