During GMA week in Nashville a few months back, Brenton Brown posted a vblog of his highlights from the event. In his video there was about a 30 second clip of Jonny Lang performing and it took my breath away, it truly did. Nick Battle's album opens with 'Shine' which is very reminiscent of a Lang song so I was very excited by the time I had got half way through the song for what the rest of the album would hold. Unfortunately Shine is my high point on the album. Don't get me wrong, there are some other great songs on the album but in my opinion it starts to strong for the rest of the album to support it.
King of My Heart features guest vocals from Andy Peircy, Chris Eaton as well as David and Carrie Grant. This leads to a pretty eclectic feeling album with the vocals chopping and changing so you kind of feel like you are listening to a compilation album which I'm not sure is what they were going for.
Shine contains some beautiful lyrics and some really sweet harmonies throughout the otherwise weak chorus which is carried through on some of the other tracks on the album. Carrie Grant's vocals are a surprisingly welcome addition to the album and I can't help but feel that the harmonies would fail if it weren't for her contribution.
The album on the whole is lyrically deep, well arranged and harmonious both in vocal and styles. However, I can't help but I wonder whether most people would find it a bit eclectic and, in places, retro for everyday listening.
