John Ellis To Release Debut Solo Album In May

Mar 11 2010

Former Tree63 front man John Ellis is set to release his self-produced debut solo album this May. The first single from the album, 'Own Way Home', will be released to radio on 22nd March and John has described it as "slightly oblique, tongue in cheek, cocky and earnest all at the same time."

The album, as yet untitled, will be released on South African independent record label Broken Records and was recorded in Johannesburg and Durban in South Africa. Ellis moved back to Durban in December 2007 after breaking up Tree63 to take a sabbatical. "I've spent these last two years raising kids, studying and writing, and only recently felt the desire to make music again. I needed a long break and I feel ready again" he says.

Ellis admits that this is the album he has always wanted to make but was unable to, due to circumstances surrounding his previous recording contract. "For the first time in many years, I feel liberated as a songwriter. During the Tree63 years I was locked in a stylistic ghetto and there was no space for me to say what I was really feeling. This debut album is my first 'real' album in that it's about what I'm about. There's a lot of healthy indignation here and a lot of hope too, although this time it's wide-eyed and worldly, as opposed to disconnected and naive."

John Ellis will be touring both locally and internationally and has recently signed with Authentic Ideas who will be managing his touring calendar.
