Interview: Mary-Clair
Contemporary Christian Music rising star Mary-Clair has released her single 'Rise Up', and talks to Louder Than The Music about working with rapper Steven Malcolm on the song.
Hi Mary-Clair, tell us a little about your new single 'Rise Up', and what inspired the song?
'Rise Up' is a song that inspires people to celebrate life in Christ. Every summer, I find myself needing a new upbeat jam for late night drives, Saturday pool days, and afternoon walks, and Rise Up is just that! It encourages the listener to be all that God created them to be!
The song also features CCM rapper Steven Malcolm, what does he bring to the track?
I am so thankful that Steven Malcolm joined the song. He brought such a unique and infectious energy that I couldn’t have created by myself. I love the way his vocal adds such a celebratory vibe!
Can you give us a little insight into your song writing process - how does an idea transform into the finished article?
When I have an idea for a song, I have to write all my feelings onto the page, and then edit them down into a unique story. It has to feel like it came straight out of my journal, but also must be able to be a great song to sing along to!
You've recently performed at the Jfest Music Festival, what was that experience like?
JFest was incredible. It was such a wonderful day filled with great music, great people, and Gods love. Playing JFest showed me how exciting this world of music that I’m stepping into is, and gave me a great opportunity to work on my craft.
Are you working on a follow up to last year's 'Enough' album, when can we expect more new music from you?
I am currently working on new music, but more importantly, discovering who I am in Christ. I am discovering who I am because of who He is. I’m so excited for the next stage of my life where I can be more honest with others and myself, through my songs and my actions.
If you had to learn a new instrument - what would it be and why?
If I learned a new instrument, it would be electric guitar. It is so cool! But I think I need to get better at acoustic guitar and piano first.
Away from your own music, what are you enjoying listening to at the moment?
I am enjoying listening to a lot of 90s and 2000s christian rock right now. Switchfoot, Audio A, etc. It is so good!
What are your plans for the second half of this year?
My plans for the rest of this year are to grow my community and to discover who I am when I’m not worried of what people might think of me. I’m falling more and more in love with music and God everyday, and I’m so thankful for it!
