For me, this is one of those songs. I can already imagine being in a field somewhere this summer, surrounded by thousands of worshippers, hearing voices of all ages singing these words together.

At the heart of ‘Spirit of the Living God’ is an incredibly simple but powerful prayer, asking the Spirit of God to come, fill the place, inhabit the praise of His people and amaze us with His presence once again. There is nothing complicated about what the song is asking, but perhaps that is exactly why it feels so powerful. Sometimes the simplest prayers are the ones we need to pray the most, and the words ‘come fill this place’ really sum up the heartbeat of this song.

What I particularly like is that it doesn’t try to say twenty different things at once or fill every moment with complicated lyrics. Instead, it gives worshippers one simple prayer to gather around: asking God to move, to meet with His people and to make His presence known. There is a humility in that which I really appreciate, because ultimately this isn’t a song about us or even about creating a big worship moment; it is simply an invitation for God to come and move.

Josh Baldwin has written and recorded many songs that have found a home in churches over the years, including ‘Stand In Your Love’, ‘Evidence’ and ‘Made For More’, and you can hear that understanding of congregational worship running through this new release. ‘Spirit of the Living God’ already feels like a song made for the Church to sing together. There is an accessibility to both the melody and the message that I think will allow worshippers of all ages to connect with it and make the prayer their own.

That is why I keep coming back to that picture in my mind of hearing this song at a summer worship event. I can imagine a field full of people, different generations standing side by side, thousands of voices joining together with one simple request for God to fill that place. Maybe it is the way the song has been written, but it has that natural congregational quality where you can almost hear the crowd singing before you have even experienced it live.

Musically, there is also something almost hymn-like about the simplicity of the song. It doesn’t need to force a huge moment or manufacture an emotional response. Instead, the music gives the words room to become the focus, allowing that prayer to grow naturally as the song develops. In a worship world where songs can sometimes become increasingly complex, there is something refreshing about a song that understands it doesn’t need to over complicate its message.

There probably isn’t much more that needs to be said about ‘Spirit of the Living God’, and strangely I mean that as a compliment. This is not necessarily a song that needs to be pulled apart and analysed; it is a song that needs to be sung and prayed. Let it become a song that equips your own time of worship, whether that is alone, in a local church or standing in a field alongside thousands of other worshippers. At its heart is one humble, important and timeless prayer to God: come fill this place.
