Which artist or artists first inspired you to become a musician, and what about them sparked that
passion?
I have been influenced by so many incredible artists over the years. Early on I sang Spice Girls and Christina Aguilera songs into my hairbrush. There’s a band based in my hometown of Waconia, Minnesota, called Traveled Ground, and I always refer to them as the “band that raised me.” They introduced me to the music of Bonnie Raitt, Janis Joplin, and Lucinda Williams. Piano songstresses Norah Jones and Sara Bareilles were two artists that inspired me to want to play piano and sing. There is something so passionate about each of those voices, something unique, the moment a song of theirs comes on, you know exactly who it is.
What’s your all-time favourite album, and why does it stand out for you?
This is such a tough question, but I really love the Little Voice record by Sara Barellis. I was in college when I first heard it, trying to figure out who I was as an artist, and that album brought me so much joy to listen to. I felt every song so deeply and her vocals are unbelievable.
What was the very first gig you ever went to? Where was it, and when?
Officially it was a Traveled Ground gig in someone’s backyard in Minnesota as a baby, but the first big concert we went to as a family was Garth Brooks at the Target Center in Minneapolis circa 1998.
What’s the most recent gig you’ve been to? Where and when was it?
The most recent gig I’ve been to is one that I also played a few weeks ago. It was a fundraising event in Norwood Young America with Jason Gray, Mark Lee and Curtis Grimes.
What does the next year look like for you—any exciting plans, projects, or goals?
I just released a brand new single “Keepin On” that is so much fun! I’ll be continuing to tour in the states and have some really fun shows lined up in France and Switzerland this fall. I’ll continue to release a few new songs throughout the year, and have some very special Christmas shows planned that will be announced soon.
