Michael Sarver’s 'Layer Two' Celebrates Battles Fought And Victories Won
Singer/songwriter and former American Idol Top 10 finalist Michael Sarver returns with the potent and personal Layer Two September 25. Following last month's critically acclaimed Layer One, the S&G Music Enterprises (WieRise Music) EP further spotlights the diverse influences comprising Sarver's musical DNA while completing an autobiographical arc tracing God's hand of provision throughout his life.
With seven tracks all co-written by Sarver, EP centerpiece “Layers” provides a throughline for both projects. A cinematic ballad that peels back the proverbial-and often painful-layers of Sarver’s journey, “Layers” acknowledges the emotional fallout of his father’s abandonment as well as the guilt and shame levied by his own choices. The process of penning “Layers” proved cathartic for Sarver, ultimately enabling him to see God’s faithfulness in every circumstance.
“I initially felt like I might not be brave enough to let the world hear ‘Layers’ because it’s deeply personal and I knew it would show my vulnerability,” Sarver admits. “But I also knew God was telling me this was more than just another song.”
EP opener “Water,” hallmarked by its rich imagery of baptism; “I Still See God,” a testimony of persevering in faith; and the convicting “Praise You With My Life” all showcase Sarver's signature pop sensibilities, while the gritty, R&B-infused “Ain’t Nobody” closes the project with an unwavering proclamation straight from the powerhouse vocalist's heart: “He’s my rock and my fortress/My only solid ground/He’s the truth that I hope in/The only peace that I’ve found.”
“Layer Two is a true continuation of Layer One in that it explores my musical influences and digs even deeper into the layers of my life,” Sarver says. “The project represents lessons learned, battles fought, and victories won. I hope my honesty can encourage others to look inward, be bold, be real, and then to heal. God is the Author AND the Finisher of our faith. If you’re breathing, you’re not done yet! No matter the enemy’s lies, God’s Word is true and He can and WILL restore you.”
