Blog: Compassion Needs You
A few months back I wrote about how Louder Than The Music is proud to be supporting Compassion, and now I want to write and tell you a bit more about that. As everyone knows, the world is currently in the middle of a financial recession, where people across the globe are struggling to make ends meet. You may be suffering with money worries yourself, but just imagine how much worse it must be if you're living in one of the poorest countries in the world, where poverty has a whole other meaning. I recently read the following from Ian Hamilton, Executive Director of Compassion UK.
"A dire repercussion of the global financial crisis is the soaring cost of food in developing countries. Nearly all of the families with children in Compassion's programme live on less than £1 a day. Despite their courage, hard work and sacrifice, most had to spend 80 per cent of their income on food even before the financial crisis hit. They couldn't afford for anything to go wrong. But in recent months, the price of food staples (such as rice and beans) has doubled, and in some areas, even tripled."
Ian goes on to say, "We heard recently that in Haiti, mothers are making 'dirt cookies'. They mid together mud, oil and salt, shape the 'dough' into cookies and bake them in the scorching sun. In West Africa, mothers are serving their children warm, salted water, so it tastes a bit like food. Never, have the poor been so poor. Compassion's ministry is needed more than ever."
In our continued attempt to promote Compassion as much as possible, LTTM are planning some special features on our website in September to coincide with Compassion Sunday. Keep checking back for more news on that nearer the time.
