Interview: Katy Crawford

Sep 23 2016

Texas-based singer/songwriter, worship leader Katy Crawford has released her new full-length album, 'Our Love Story'. We spoke to Katy about the release, and her thoughts on making music.

Tell us a little bit about this new album of yours.

Our Love Story is my first full-length album, and my first album in English. It is a collection of love songs to and about the Lord. I have been writing songs since I was a teenager, the majority of which I release at my home church. This album is God’s timing after all these years for me to release some of those songs to the world. I’m excited to see what He will do with it!

Which is your favourite track on the album and why?

I have a few, but I have to say my favorite is “Magnet.” It is the most recent song I wrote that I was able to include on the album. It is as poignant for me today as it was when I wrote it. I often get caught up in the stress of a busy life and feel overextended and distant from the Lord, but He is always faithful to put me back together and draw me close. It is a song about the faithfulness of God’s love, despite my own human failings.

If you could work with any songwriter, who would it be and why?

Martin Smith (formerly of the band Delirious?). I grew up worshiping to their music and love what he is continuing to do in his ministry. I would love to write with him because he is inspired by a very real relationship with God and his work is anointed and impactful.

Do you prefer playing live or working in the studio?

I still feel rather new at studio performance, so perhaps this might change with practice, but I prefer playing live, which is what I am more accustomed to. I feel freer when I am on a stage, whereas in a studio, I find myself critiquing every aspect of my performance.

How would you describe your style of music and what are your influences?

My music has a very singer-songwriter vibe. I tend to try to incorporate different styles and genres in my writing. Some of my influences are jazz, folk, and pop.

How would you define success in your career?

I would love for my music to make it to the radio, where it can reach a much larger audience and minister on a much greater scale.

What is your favorite album of all time?

Goodness, I have to choose? Secular music: Coldplay’s Viva La Vida, because, to me, it is eerily historical, and I love to study history. Christian music: Delirious’ Glo. I played that album over and over again after it came out. It became a huge part of me, and I still love it today.

You’re stuck on an island, it’s hot, you only have enough battery life left to listen to one song on your mp3 player. What track is it?

“You Never Let Go,” by Matt Redman

What does the next year hold for Katy Crawford?

I honestly have no idea. All I know is that the Lord has great plans for my new album and for this next season of my life. I am expectant.
