Louder Than The Music

Singer-songwriter Paul Bell casts his unique lyrical eye over the festive season in his first Christmas EP. The collection, simply entitled 'Merry Christmas…' comprises four original songs, ranging from the comic to the more reflective and Paul’s take on the carol 'Joy to the World'.

Paul writes, “I love Christmas music. There are certain songs that just seem to set the tone for a special time of year”.

“Christmas to the men” is a sideways look at the ways men have a tendency to mess up Christmas. “The Bounty and the Snickers” is a tongue-in-cheek rant at the worst chocolates in the tub of “Celebrations”. “Under Bethlehem skies” and “Starting small” are reflections on the contrasts of the Christmas story. As Paul sings in the last track of the EP - “The King of kings and Lord of lords… a baby in a cattle stall, starting small”.

Musically, this collection finds Paul at the piano, augmented with brass, glockenspiel, harmonium, upright bass and various other instruments. Working again with producers and multi-instrumentalists Dan and Matt Weeks, the recording came together quickly over three days in a studio on the South Coast. The songs have a unique, slightly quirky vibe which Dan describes as “Ivor the Engine meets the Mr Men theme tune”.

To coincide with the release of the EP, Paul embarks on a 10 date tour of the UK. Paul has independently released four albums, performed at numerous festivals including Spring Harvest, Big Church Day Out, Greenbelt, New Wine and others and has had music played on BBC Radio 2, BBC Introducing, UCB and Premier Radio.
