Eight years since the band finished Five Iron Frenzy are back with a new album called 'Engine Of A Million Plots'. As is normal these days, this new studio album was overwhelmingly supported through a Kickstarter project that made history, raising seven times the asking goal. In less than an hour, fans met the goal and then continued to pledge raising more than $207k.

From a personal level, I have to admit, I have never been into the bands music. I suppose I 'got into' Christian music in the early 2000's, so missed this band the first time around. So I listened to this project with new ears. Fans of the band who know the 'sound' of the band might have a different view of this album, but as a person who has only really heard this album, all I can is I love this album and it's sounds.
The album is packed with a big sound that bursts out of these big rock anthems. Opening tracks Against a Sea of Troubles and So Far are high energy rock songs with some great saxophone work. At times the album feels a bit punk pop rock, the tracks Zen & the Art of Xenophobia and We Own The Skies are perfect examples of this. This might not be the modern rock chart sound of 'the moment' but there is certainly energy oozing out of the tracks.
As a new person to the sound of Five Iron Frenzy hearing this album, I think I can see why this band was very popular during their mid to late nineties stint. I suppose that style does come out in some songs, like the up tempo and brilliant track Battle Dancing Unicorns with Glitter, which has a great bass sound.
I'm sure fans of the band will be happy to have their band back and I'm sure they are loving the new songs, as they are a great quality. This album feels like it's track after track of raw energy, something that is missing a little bit in the music world at the moment.
