Brokenfor from Norwich have just released their newest EP It's Not Me, You Are. The band have been playing together for around 9 years, but it wasn't until 2010 that the band produced their first EP titled 'As Surely As I Breathe', which included six tracks but as the band themselves said "some how we still hadn't found our 'sound'". For all who don't know, Brokenfor are Ben (lead vocals, guitars), Dan (Bass, keys, glockenspiel, backing vocals) and Dicky (drums).

'It's Not Me, You Are' is made up of five tracks and a remix, four of the tracks were recorded with Chris Taylor & Sanjay Rajo of hi-sonsorous who are based in Southampton. With the fifth track and the remix being recorded by the band themselves. This whole album sounds a lot like rock band Dweeb, maybe not as aggressive as Dweeb, but the sound does take a modern mainstream feel with maybe inspiration coming from a mixed bag of bands like Friendly Fire, The Vaccines, Frankie & The Heatstrings and other modern synth-rock guitar-riff bands.
I love the storytelling behind some the songs, they start with the synth led beat track Reaction (great opening riff) with a story about "John & Jane, holding hands". Who are John & Jane? You've got to listen to find out what they're doing, all very creative. I also love in A + B Chemistry the lines "We're not listening, we found our own sound...". This is a band who are comfortable in their own sound and skin, and it's great to see. Pull Me Closer takes on the Rend Collective Experiment vibe, with the tone of the guitars resonating like in the Rend track 'Come On My Soul'. The stunning A Friend takes a look at things a bit differently, this synth led lullaby is a beautiful song.
But for me the magic moment has to be the remix, this is truly a great remix, a really modern sound of the times. It's the last track on the album but the one I keep going back to. Is this EP the EP to send Brokenfor crashing into the mainstream world and turn the band into household names? No, but I tell you what, it's a massive step forward. If you like bands that feature in magazines like NME, then Brokenfor are one of the up and coming indie rock alternative bands that are really pushing theire sound to be as good as anything that is coming out of the indie rock world. Keep going guys.
