Interview: Bruce Baker
Bruce Baker, an international singer/songwriter and composer, has just released his single, 'I Know Why'. Louder Than The Music chatted with him to hear more about the inspiration behind his music.
For those who haven't heard of you before, can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got involved in making music?
I’m very outgoing, I love to explore, I love skateboarding, mountain hiking, beach crashing you name it. I’m the man that’s known for doing everything opposite how everyone else does it. I was born with a different personality, the way I love God's children is different and the way I spread the gospel is different. You can call me Mr. Different.
Tell us about your new single 'I Know Why' and what the inspiration behind it was?
The inspiration behind this song was derived purely from the means of Christ suffering. Each stripe on Christ's back represents a level of freedom and such freedoms will never ask but demand emancipation from all barriers in life both spiritually and naturally.
You've described yourself as a "Rock n' Roll Pastor", tell us more!
I’m a full time Pastor that listens to many Christian Genres of music from Praise and Worship to Christian Rock. When I’m not in the pulpit I am dressed like a rocker.
What message would you like people to take from your music?
I hope that after listening to ( I Know Why) every person will become a proclamation petitioner and a voice that will scream there is such a thing called freedom. That freedom is the freedom to surf, skateboard and live that rambunctious extreme life filled with exploration in The Holy Spirit.
How would you describe your style of music and what are your influences?
My style of music to me is like water when the Holy Spirit pours lyrics into the cup of my mind. I take shape to it rather it’s rambunctious, mellow, hard-hitting or smooth. My influences are bands call Switch Foot, Since October ,The Afters, Skillet etc..
If you could work with any songwriter, who would it be and why?
If I had to work with any artist it would be the band call Switchfoot because their style of music is astronomical. It’s like they produce music in an atmosphere that’s known in the church community as drunk in the Holy Spirit and for lyrics sake their style of wording is extremely incredible.
How would you define success in your career as an artist?
My success will always be predicated on 4 things:
1. Staying in the Holy Spirit's perfect will,
2. Spreading the gospel through my music,
3. Staying humble through the journey.
4. Experiencing financial gain which to me means experiencing different levels of Gods blessings according to the season I’m in.
What is your favorite album of all time?
One of my Favorite albums is Chris Rice: Amusing
You're stuck on an island, it's hot, you only have enough battery life left to listen to one song on your phone. What track is it?
If I was stuck on a island the one song I would listen to would be To God Be the Glory by Sissel Kyrkjebø.
What does the next year hold for you?
Next year holds by faith Grammys, awesome collaborations and to make Jesus prouder than ever.
