Interview: HeIsTheArtist

Apr 12 2022

Christian singer/songwriter Leemann Bassey aka HeIsTheArtist, has released his single 'Boom (Doo Wop Version)'. Louder Than The Music chatted with him about this new version of his song, his forthcoming new EP and his advice to artists just starting out.

Tell us about your new single 'Boom (Doo Wop Version)' and what the inspiration behind it was?

The original religious version of the song is titled 'Boom (Remastered).' However, 'Boom (Doo Wop Version)' is a love song simply because God is love. The song is basically an introduction to the Gospel for the non-religious.

The song features Joel Kibble of multi-Grammy Award winning group, Take 6 - explain how that came about and what Joel brings to the track?

The collaboration was all coordinated by my great manager Michael Stover. I was looking for an artist that could give a nice harmonic Intro to the track and Joel brought that plus more.

Do you have any plans to release more new music soon?

Yes, my EP 'The Faded Outro: The Crucifixion Of a Broken Heart' debuts on April 15th.

How would you describe your song writing process?

My songwriting process involves a lot of prayer. I let God lead me to write what he wants me to write because I am his evangelist and whatever comes to my pen, I know it was in God's will for me to write.

If you could collaborate with any artist on your next song, who would you love to work with?

Definitely Maxwell. He is one of my biggest Soul Music inspirations.

What achievement in your career so far are you most proud of?

Being nominated for 4 Prayze Factor Awards this year is definitely my proudest achievement so far, because it shows that I'm really connecting with the Christian audience.

Away from your own music, what are you listening to lately?

I'm a fan of Afro-Pop artist, Tems, new song 'Free Mind' and 'Hrs and Hrs' by R&B singer Muni Long. Both artists are unique and are a positive and uplifting influence for the music industry at large.

What advice would you give to an artist who is just starting out at the moment?

To believe in yourself or no one else will. Every artist is competing with millions of other artists for very few spots. It takes resilience to make it in this industry.

What does the next year hold for you?

More promotion and live performances of songs off of my EP 'The Faded Outro'. The EP is definitely one that is worth continuous promotion and reaching broader audiences with.
