Interview: Veetacore

Sep 16 2010

Unsigned British band Veetacore could be the next big thing. Whilst they're keeping things low key at the moment, with a debut EP available for free download, the band have plenty of potential for the future. LTTM spoke to them to find out who they are and where they're going.

For those who haven't heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got involved in making music?

All members of the band have been friends for a long time. In fact, Becky used to babysit for Tom when he was a young lad! All members have been playing music together in various bands for the last few years and have recorded and toured together too.

How did you come up with the name of the band, and what's the meaning behind it?

The name 'Veetacore' comes from a children’s TV programme ‘Through the Dragons Eye’ that Becky and Dan used to watch at Primary School. When thinking about choosing a name, the band happened to watch an old re-run of this programme and thought the word stood out and would be memorable.

Tell us about your debut EP and what the inspiration behind it was?

The EP is called 'The Monopoly', and is available on FREE download on the 12th September. We recorded the EP quite soon after forming the band so everything was still very new and exciting, although that’s not to say that there is no inspiration behind the tracks. Becky writes the lyrics and each song on the EP has a meaning behind it, mostly taken from daily observations of the world we live in and things that we think about late at night.

Which is your favourite track on the EP and why?

Our favourite track on the EP would be the Single 'Battle of Dogger Bank', but 'Taize' is a close second as it has a lot of energy when we play live. We are filming a Music Video for the single in August and will be ready at the start of October.

Who are your musical influences?

Our influences come mainly from Pop/Rock bands in the UK and US, such as Foo Fighters, Paramore and Biffy Clyro.

What are your ambitions as a band?

We have tried to keep our ambitions fairly low key from the start, as then you are much more likely to achieve it and then remain motivated to keep going. We would all love to do Veetacore full time and maybe that will happen sometime, but we see Bournemouth as our main focus for now and want to spread the word in our own town before we look to 'get signed'.

A lot of well known Christian bands in the UK have been coming to an end lately, do you see this as a good opportunity to take up the mantle?

We have not really given much thought to this to be honest. We all know there have been many Christian bands calling it a day recently, however as a band we feel that our vision is to be open to where our music takes us, not to put ourselves in any particular box that so many people want to put us in.

If you could work with any song writer, who would it be and why?

As a band we all love the songs from Paramore, so working with Hayley Williams and the band would be pretty cool. However, John Mayer would probably be a dream come true for us as we all totally love his song writing!

You're stuck on an island, it's hot, you only have enough battery life left to listen to one song on your mp3 player. What track is it?

Tom’s new fav band are Young the Giant, so something by them. Dan is loving some Joshua Redman at the moment, and Becky's tune would have to be Airplanes by BOB Feat. Hayley Williams.

What does the next year hold for Veetacore?

Lots of gigs, more recordings and plenty of Tesco Cookies & Frijj Milkshakes! We’re on tour in October with our friends Brought Into Being which is going to be amazing, we also have our EP release on free download with Music Video. We have some shows in Germany later in the year so will enjoy being out on the road in Europe. We also want to start work on album number one...
