Interview: Hanna Maria
Check out our mini interview with the brilliant Hanna Maria
Which artist or artists first inspired you to become a musician, and what about them sparked that passion?
It’s a huge list, but some of the most notable artists for me are Kate Bush, Victoria Tolstoy, Prince, Norma Winstone, and Kimbra, to name a few. Both sides of my family are filled with musicians, so it was expected that we would all learn an instrument and be part of music groups — so I didn’t really have a choice!
What’s your all-time favourite album, and why does it stand out for you?
I continually find myself drawn back to Loopified by Dirty Loops. The musicianship is playful, inventive, and full of joy, and Jonah Nilsson’s vocals are simply extraordinary.
What was the very first gig you ever went to? Where was it, and when?
The first concert I ever attended was the Backstreet Boys in my home country of Finland. I had a very classic teenage crush on Nick Carter, so it’s a memory that has stayed with me!
What’s the most recent gig you’ve been to? Where and when was it?
Jacob Collier in London — seeing that level of genius can be a shock to the system, but he always leaves me feeling energised by his seemingly infinite skills.
What does the next year look like for you—any exciting plans, projects, or goals?
After living with damaged vocal cords for over a decade, I’m now able to finally release my music. I’m incredibly grateful to God that, through surgery and vocal therapy, I can make music freely and give glory to a wonderful God. I’m also very fortunate to have married an amazing producer and musician, which allows me the flexibility to balance my music teaching, worship commitments, and creative work.
