For those who haven’t heard of you before, can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got involved in making music?
I’m Hanna Maria. I am originally from Finland but have lived about half of my life in the UK. Music was unavoidable in my family, yet for a long time I tried to do almost everything except commit to it. I explored graphic design, project management, and even business, but music kept pulling me back.
That journey eventually led me to study at Trinity College of Music in London, but I still felt I hadn’t discovered a style that was truly my own. Then, later in my life, everything shifted. God powerfully stepped into my world and turned it around and I knew I wanted to live for Him. Suddenly all the music that had been part of my years finally made sense. Since then, music has become a way for me to live out my faith through songwriting and by serving in a worship team.
Tell us about your new single ‘I Keep My Eyes On You’ and the inspiration behind it?
The song was born out of a very real season. When God turned my life around, it did not mean everything suddenly became easy or resolved. In fact, I found myself in a very uncertain place where many things were confusing.
It became a genuine gym of faith. I had to learn what it actually means to trust God. ‘I Keep My Eyes On You’ reflects that journey of discovering that I have a Father who fights my battles, protects me, and gives peace beyond understanding even when the circumstances around me do not change. Looking back, it was actually one of the most fruitful chapters because I had to lean entirely on God rather than my own understanding. It shaped my faith deeply and I will always treasure that time as the place where I truly learned what it means to follow Jesus.
Do you have any plans to release more music in the near future?
For many years I was unable to record properly because of severe vocal damage. It was a difficult road, but after surgery and a long period of intense vocal therapy, I am finally able to sing and record again.
Now that my voice is back, I have an overwhelming excitement to write and release music. I am eager to share more tracks in the coming months. It feels incredibly special to return to these songs and shape them into the sound we are currently developing. It feels like opening a door that had been closed for a long time, and I am deeply grateful to finally share music that has been forming in my life for many years.
What message would you like people to take from your music?
God is amazing.
Becoming a follower of Jesus is the best decision anyone can ever make. The world fails, people fail, and I fail too, but God never does. My hope is that through my music people might be reminded of that truth. And if even one person reconnects with God or discovers Jesus for the first time through a song, I would be incredibly grateful.
How would you describe your style of music and what are your influences?
For me, music has always been a mix of many influences. Having spent years playing and listening to everything from classical music to world music, jazz, and pop, I’ve always loved how different musical worlds can shape emotion and atmosphere.
My husband Alex produces my music, and we really enjoy exploring those influences and bringing them together in a way that serves the message of each song. Rather than staying in one musical lane, we often try to build a musical arc where the sound itself helps carry the story. At the heart of it, the goal is always the same: to create music that helps point people to God.
If you could work with any songwriter, who would it be and why?
Actually, I already feel incredibly lucky because I get to work with someone who truly understands my musical style and vision. Because Alex and I live in the same house, the creative process happens very naturally.
Ideas often appear while we’re driving somewhere or simply talking about life. Our kids sometimes get a bit frustrated because what starts as a movie night can suddenly turn into a songwriting session! There are of course many amazing songwriters out there, but right now I am simply very grateful to have him beside me. He can be honest and direct when needed, yet always flexible and supportive of the creative process.
How would you define success in your career as an artist?
If I can create music that genuinely makes me happy, that already feels like a win. And if someone else connects with it too, then that is a wonderful bonus. Staying true to myself is really important, and I feel my role is simply to be faithful to the path I’ve been given.
Ultimately, success in this world doesn’t really matter in eternity. What matters is how I used the little loaves and fishes I was given to glorify Him.
What is your favourite album of all time?
If I am honest, I don’t really have one favourite album. What tends to inspire me more are little musical moments like a samba batucada break, a chord progression in a Pink Floyd track, the emotional world of a Björk melody, or the atmosphere of a film soundtrack like The Dark Knight. Those small sparks often stay with me and somehow find their way into the music I create.
You're stuck on an island, it’s hot, you only have enough battery life left to listen to one song on your phone. What track is it?
Miserere mei, Deus by Gregorio Allegri. It is a stunning piece of music, and the way the music carries the words of the scripture is breathtaking. And when the battery dies, I still have a voice I can keep using!
What does the next year hold for you?
I am really excited to release as much music as I can. I have also got one or two collaborations in the pipeline that I am ready to start working on. I just feel very grateful for this new chapter of my life.
