There is something I really like about Saving Jesus. Christopher isn't trying to make every song sound the same, and across these five tracks there is a real sense of a songwriter who enjoys telling stories. At times it is upbeat and uplifting, while elsewhere the music becomes much more reflective, but the thread running through the EP is a very simple one — life can be difficult, but God's grace is always there.

The EP opens with ‘Goliath’, which is pretty much what you would expect from the title — a song about dealing with the giants in our lives. But rather than making it feel like another predictable battle song, Christopher gives it plenty of character. There is a mix of country, pop and mid-tempo rock, while his warm, rustic voice gives the track plenty of soul. The lyric “the bigger they are, the harder they fall” sums up the confidence running through the song.

I also really like ‘Grace Happened’, which is probably one of the tracks that stood out to me most. There is something wonderfully uplifting about it, both musically and lyrically. Christopher has a soulful voice that suits these songs really well, and ‘Grace Happened’ captures the wider theme of the EP — God's grace showing up in the middle of our very ordinary, and sometimes very difficult, lives.

Then everything changes with the title track, ‘Saving Jesus’. After the first couple of songs, this feels like a real shift in atmosphere. It is haunting, beautiful and much more reflective.

The song is a collaboration with country artist Conner Smith, and it is an interesting pairing. Christopher had previously shared an acoustic version of the song on social media, creating plenty of anticipation around its release. Smith was so taken by the song that he invited Christopher to perform it with him at the Grand Ole Opry, before joining him on the official recording.

Vocally, the two couldn't be much more different — and that's exactly why it works. Christopher brings a softer, airy quality to the song, while Smith's rugged, harder-hitting country vocals add another dimension. Rather than one voice overpowering the other, they balance each other beautifully. For me, this is one of the strongest moments on the EP.

‘Well Water’ brings us back to the storytelling side of Christopher's songwriting. There are some lovely guitar parts, a strong melody and plenty going on lyrically. It could have easily gone down a much more traditional country route, but the production keeps things lighter and more atmospheric. That gives the song a slightly different feel and stops the EP from becoming too predictable.

And then there is ‘White Knuckles’, which is another track where I particularly enjoyed the guitar work. The song takes a real musical journey, with the guitars helping to build and shape the track as it progresses. Again, though, the music is there to support the message — this is a song about letting go, about those moments when we are trying to hold everything together ourselves and need to trust God instead.

The closing lyric, “Cause Lord, I know that you're holding on to me,” is a beautiful way to finish the EP and, in many ways, sums up what Saving Jesus is all about.

For a debut EP, Saving Jesus is a really strong introduction to Micah Christopher. What I like most is that it doesn't feel like Christopher is simply trying to tick the boxes of country, worship or Christian music. He sounds like a songwriter first - someone who has stories to tell - and his faith naturally runs through those stories.
