Interview: Jeremi and Amy Richardson (Plus Free Song Download)

Nov 05 2012

As one half of the Grammy-nominated group Avalon, Jeremi and Amy Richardson are no strangers to the world of CCM. But with the duo releasing their own album, 'Never Let Go', LTTM decided to find out more about them.

For those who haven't heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about yourselves and how you got involved in making music?

We have been singing together and with other artists since 1998. We have had the joy of traveling the world and singing in many exciting segments. We are focused on the church and have often found our greatest joy in leading worship in local church settings. We reside in Nashville, TN.

Jeremi is originally from Cleveland, TN and Amy is from Galax, VA. We met in college at Lee University where we both sang and traveled together. We have sang most notably with The Voices of Liberty at Walt Disney World and the CCM group, Avalon.

Never Let GoTell us a little bit about your new album 'Never Let Go' and what the inspiration behind it was?

Never Let Go, has been 10 years in the making. When Amy and I got married we knew immediately that we wanted to make music. We spent so much time "doing life" that the project kept getting pushed and pushed. We now see and know that it was all about Gods timing. We have never been as thankful for each other and the gift of music. It has been a beautiful treasure to us sharing this project and part of our story with the church. I pray that God is glorified in every word and note on every track.

Which is your favourite track on the album and why?

Never Let Go (Amy) - I love the message of this song and the child like faith shown by two oldest girls with their voices added to the track .

Awesome / Ancient Wells (Jeremi) - I believe there is so much hope and celebration in these two songs. I love the way they push me to joy in Christ. I love the lyric "Heart's starts beating in freedom and lungs start breathing in the breath of God..."

What's your song writing process?

I honestly have only been writing for about 9 months - we had some interesting prayer and decision time while picking songs for this album. I am not sure what the process is. It seems it is like a rain shower and then drought. I hear so clearly the melody and lyrics and then put them to paper. I am not sure this is how it works for everyone but I find myself getting a lyric and then the story/testimony and then the birthing of the song begins. I enjoy the process!

How would you describe your style of music and what are your influences?

I think our style is a marriage of many genres: we love pop, praise and worship, and gospel music. I do think there are hints of this all over the album and concerts.

Away from this side project, you're also members of the group Avalon - can we expect to hear a new album from Avalon any time soon?

I believe you will hear new music from Avalon very soon. We have had several discussions are are looking at some very exciting ventures in 2013. Scheduling is always fun to work out; we have so many dynamics but our children always take precedence. I know that some may not understand our thoughts toward this but I believe God always smiles upon us when we keep our families first. We are so thankful for the fans (I prefer to call the friends) of Avalon. The support and love shown to us and the group over the years is often overwhelming. Avalon loves ministry and we will continue to sing and share His truth as long as there are ears to listen.

In your opinion, what makes the perfect worship song?

God at the center. I believe stories are important but sometimes the story gets in the way of His face. If his face is seen then our focus can remain on Him and we can truly worship

What advice would you give to any aspiring singers or songwriters out there?

Never give up; be open to advice; always strive to be better, learn your craft - dream BIG!

You're stuck on an island, it's hot, you only have enough battery life left to listen to one song on your mp3 player. What track is it?

At this time I would say Never Let Go; that way I could have my precious children's voices with me at all times and no this is not a plug for the album :)

What does the next year hold for you both?

A Christmas Album, Another Worship Album (hopefully), dance recitals, concerts, a cruise... boy, this could be a long list.
