Review: David Crowder*Band
How He Loves
Single

Jun 25 2009

Despite the fact that their new album does not debut until September, David Crowder*Band have given their fans a sneak preview with the release of their new single, 'How He Loves'. The song itself is a cover of a sublime track penned by singer/songwriter John Mark McMillan, written after his friend died in a car accident.

Anyone who has heard the song itself will tell you that it is truly stunning and totally heartbreaking. The tune soars and swells from a quiet intimate number into a captivating anthem. It's true beauty is in its wonderfully (and knowingly flawed) attempt to encapsulate God's indescribable love in mere words, opening with 'he is jealous for me. Loves like a hurricane, I am a tree, bending beneath the weight of his wind and mercy.' The metaphors are fresh, which really makes the song stand out from the cliches we have come to know from some modern Christian music.

The band's rendition itself is very good, and does the song justice, although it feels far too short to truly become a classic. However, David Crowder has promised that a longer version with a better arrangement will be placed on the studio album itself.

So far, this year has been an excellent one for Christian music, but on the basis of this track, it's only going to get better. I would urge everyone to check out this single, and McMillan's lovely original version. It will knock your socks off.
