Review: Proxy Worship
The Call

Aug 07 2009

Proxy Worship open their website with the headline that they are not a band, not a group but they are 'a ministry wanting to serve God's answer to the world - The Church'. A little box on the left hand side says in small writing 'if you would to purchase an album, please email us at.......' and after listening to The Call I know that that is a very important little box.

At times a couple of songs open with guitar riffs similar to Delirious? riffs from their early days but each song explodes into its own. The opener of Hands Up has one of these riffs before bringing in a beautiful voice, catchy melody and some classic drums to finish a great mix. This pretty much sets the scene for the majority of the album but there are some beautiful ballads.

These ballads fit perfectly with the soulful, heartfelt lyrics of each and every song. They use the simplicity of a beautiful voice with a piano to set off the lyrics on Look Upon The Cross and again Atonement Song before gently introducing the rhythm section. They have a great Sarah McLachlan or Evanescence type feel to them which is quite a feat.

On the whole this is a pretty kicking album. Even with the stark differences between the mostly upbeat tracks and the two slower tunes the album flows easily along. Some of the lyrics will leap out and hit you as something you have been saying or trying to say for a while, others will just resonate in you as they explain the truths you know.

This isn't a ground breaking album, this isn't a band or group or ministry trying to bring something new to the field. This is an album that proves there is no need to try and re-invent the wheel. It works.
