Marc James, most of you are probably wondering who he is, well let me put you in the picture. Marc James is frontman, singer and songwriter of rock trio Verra Cruz. Marc has been a worship leader and songwriter from the UK Vineyard group of churches for a good few years now. Now this talented singer has created and produced his own solo worship album called Surrender.
After a few listens on the way home from a family holiday in the car, the songs started to jump out at me as true worship songs, from the heart and sung with passion, that’s what makes this album so different. From the word go you can hear the distinctive vocals of Mr James coming through, these edgy aggressive unique vocals we have become so aware of during the records of Verra Cruz are ones that shape the sound of this album.
Lyrically this album is full of words that wouldn't be out of place sung in your local church, these are word and lyrics written to equip and empower the church to do God’s work. These songs are a way of looking towards the Almighty One which should then equip us to go out to a hurting world.
There is an edge to the songs on the album, Marc has taken his style of rock guitar and put this into these worship songs, you especially hear this during the first two tracks of I Worship You Now and Great Is Your Faithfulness. This comment might sound a little strange but these two songs have a similar sound to the rock band The Kings of Leon.
Title track Surrender is probably the best known song off the album, with wonderful lyrics of "I’m giving you my heart, and all that is within...", it’s one of the songs that you have to really mean when singing. Another highlight of the album is the stunning track Jesus Your Love Is All I Need with intimate lyrics and a gentle tone.
Surrender is a good solo album, at times the album and song have an edge, force and grunt, yet perfectly placed. Some amazing worship songs that are intimate and full of space for God to move.
