Interview: The SAGA

Dec 09 2020

Melbourne based pop duo The SAGA have released their new single 'Ordinary Lives'. Louder Than The Music chatted with Alyssa Agius & Georga Byrne, the two talented ladies who make up this group, to find out more about them, their music, and what inspires them.

For those who haven't heard of you before, can you tell us a bit about yourselves and how you got involved in making music?

We’ve both been singing and performing from a very young age. We both started working professionally in the music industry from the age of 16. We’ve been able to turn our passion for music into our living through performances and tours all around the world.

Tell us about your new single 'Ordinary Lives' and what the inspiration behind it was?

We wrote Ordinary Lives between lockdowns for Covid_19 in Melbourne, Australia. Our producer Luke Batterbury was inspired with a chorus and sat down with us to chat about 2020. During this time, we spoke about how there are so many voices in the world, but if we are still enough and listen to the voice of truth, then that is the pathway to an extraordinary life. This is where Ordinary Lives was born.

Do you have any plans to release further music in the near future?

We are constantly writing and recording and we have big plans for the next few months. As we draw closer to Christmas, we’ll be releasing a special Christmas cover and new original music in 2021.

What message would you like people to take from your music?

When people listen to our music, we hope they feel uplifted. We want to give a message of hope and remind people that they are never alone.

How would you describe your style of music and what are your influences?

Our music is very pop driven. Both of us as well as our producer Luke Batterbury listen to a wide range of music, however our biggest influences would be Brooke Fraser and For King & Country, as well as so many others.

If you could work with any songwriter, who would it be and why?

We would all have different answers for this. For Alyssa, it would be Matt Maher as she has seen his songwriting develop into something incredible over the span of his career and he has written some of her favourite songs of all time. For Georga, it would be Brooke Fraser as she believes her melodies and lyrics are beautiful and she is a very prophetic and prolific songwriter.

How would you define success in your career as an artist?

We would say that if our music has impacted just one person, and given them some hope if they have been in a dark place, then we have been successful.

What is your favorite album of all time?

This is such a difficult question but we will say what first comes to mind. Alyssa’s favourite album is Burn The Ships by For King & Country and Georga’s favourite album is Albertine by Brooke Fraser.

You're stuck on an island, it's hot, you only have enough battery life left to listen to one song on your phone. What track is it?

These questions are hard haha! Alyssa would choose Lord I Need You by Matt Maher and Georga would choose Awake My Soul by Brooke Fraser.

What does the next year hold for you?

2021 will see us doing lots of live gigs, radio interviews and releasing brand new original music.
