Louder Than The Music

Rock band Decyfer Down released their latest album 'Crash' last year and have been tirelessly touring ever since. The band's drummer Josh Oliver gives us a brief insight into the band in this quick fire interview, exclusive to LouderThanTheMusic.

'Decyfer Down' is an unusual name for a band! How did you pick the name and what is the meaning behind it?

Decyfer means to interpret and it really fits with our vision and what God's done in our lives.

It sounds like it has been a pretty torrid time for you as a band. A couple of years ago you guys were involved in a very nasty sounding collision on your tour bus. Then there have been various personal turmoils. How have you kept going through these troubling times?

If it wasn't for the love and support of our fans we wouldn't have made it. No matters what trials we face, still seeing lives changed is our fuel to keep going.

You've recently toured with Skillet, how did you find that and what did you learn along the way?

It's a blessing and an inspiration to tour with a band like Skillet. They are awesome role models of how to be a Christian in the music business.

Earlier this year you released your second album 'Crash'. Tell us a little bit about the album and what the inspiration behind it was?

This album reveals a more mature Decyfer Down. We wanted to express a deeper level in our lives. We wanted to connect with people in a broad manner with our types of songs. These songs are where we came from and where we are going. We have experienced a lot of things on the road and they really shine through on the record.

What's your song writing process?

We all get together, throw out a bunch of ideas and see what lands.

How would you describe your style of music and what are your influences?

We have a broad amount of influences. We love big guitars, meaningful lyrics and great melodies. Anything with passion behind it.

What advice would you give to any aspiring bands out there, looking at starting a music career?

Focus on what God called you to do, not what other bands out there are doing. Stay true to your background and the style you feel comfortable with. Don't chase other people's visions and blessings.

How would you define success in your career as a band?

Looking at all of the hearts and lives changed by our music brings value to us as a band.

You're stuck on an island, it's hot, you only have enough battery life left to listen to one song on your mp3 player. What track is it?

Probably Switchfoot's 'This Is Your Life', to torture myself!

What does the next year hold for Decyfer Down?

Lots of touring, record number three and hopefully to continue to connect with the fans.
