Interview: Peter Furler

Jun 09 2011

Former Newsboys lead singer Peter Furler talks to LTTM about his debut solo album 'On Fire' which releases this month. Find out about his time with the Newsboys and his thoughts on songwriting.

Tell us a little bit about your new album 'On Fire' and what the inspiration behind it was?

These songs echo my joy, peace, freedom and faith. When we're born again, our spirit is free to join with God's Spirit. Then, if and when we begin reading... and doing what Jesus said, and following the promptings of the Spirit of God, this leads our hearts and minds to live without being bound, trapped... or led by emotions, anxiety or the material. To be 'on fire' is to live the full life of Christ. These songs echo joy... peace... freedom and faith.

Which is your favourite track on the album and why?

At the moment it would be 'Glory to the King' I love the imagery of the lyric, and the melody is one of my favorites I've written so far.

What made you decide to release a solo album now?

The songs kept coming. The right thing seemed to be to finish them and release them.

What was the motivation behind your decision to leave Newsboys back in 2009?

I loved my time with the newsboys. I love those lads, but it was time to hop off the 'merry go round' of non-stop touring. I had an urging that it was important to simplify, and to let the ground rest 'creatively'. God did not make the horse to win at the races, He made it for His pleasure, to watch it run.

What are your favourite memories from your time in Newsboys?

Singing in front of 15,000 Muslims in Morocco, a new age festival in Israel, Universities in China, Summer Festivals in the USA, Pubs in Australia.

What's your song writing process?

I usually start with a guitar or keyboard, loops or sounds. Other times, a melody or thought pops into my head, and I begin the process of turning what I have into a song. Sometimes that process is a matter of minutes, sometimes a matter of years. I don't listen to much music... so when I sit down to write... I write want I would like to hear.

In your opinion, what makes the perfect song?

One sung from the heart, through lips, to God's ears.

What advice would you give to any aspiring singers or songwriters out there?

Document as much as possible. Practice. Stir up your gifts. Find your own voice. Don't do it for fame or money. Ask. Seek. Knock.

You're stuck on an island, it's hot, you only have enough battery life left to listen to one song on your mp3 player. What track is it?

The shortest one.

What does the next year hold for Peter Furler?

I hope to write and record some more songs... sing live in front of some people... I really take a day at a time... Tomorrow, if the surf's up, Lord willing, I'm going for it!
