Interview: Anthony Evans
LTTM Caught up with Anthony Evans to talk about his new album 'Back To Life' and the process of making music, plus his time on popular TV show The Voice!
Tell us a little bit about this new album 'Back To Life?
Back to Life was birthed out of a journey that I had in Authenticity, Vulnerability and Transparancy. In any race you need a starting line to measure progress. The starting line to my journey to coming back to life spiritually started when I engaged these three principles as it relates to my relationship with God and others.
Which is your favourite track on the album and why?
My favorite track right now is See You Again. It is a plea for God to show Himself fresh. That is what I want… to not live solely on what God has done in the past. I want to experience Him in a fresh way.
This I believe is your eighth album, is the process of making music still as exciting?
The process is still very exciting due to the fact that I don’t do things the same way every time. I constantly change it up. The team I have around me now is by far a conglomerate of some of the most talented people I have ever met?
If you could work with any songwriter, who would it be and why?
I would want to work with Sia. She has an approach that is unconventional and I love people who operate outside of the box.
Do you prefer playing live or working in the studio?
Playing live! I love people. Music, for me is a tool to connect to hearts. I love to use that tool in a live setting because you get to see the impact and God working 1st hand.
Did you enjoy the process of being on The Voice in 2012?
I loved it. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The Voice was a tool God used in reminding me that He did not give me a gift for me to just use it within the four walls of a church. The lessons I learned on that show were beyond anything I could describe. I would do it again.
How would you describe your style of music and what are your influences?
I would classify my style as pop and soul infused worship. My influences range early on from Amy Grant, Steven Curtis and Michael W to Andre Crouch, Comissioned and The Winans. That is why Pop and Soul are a vital part of what I do.
How would you define success in your career?
Internal Peace is how I define success. Awards, #1 records and sold out crowds DO NOT give you the opportunity to then go and purchase peace. So, I had to redefine success years ago and fulfilling my calling while at peace is what I chase after.
What is your favorite album of all time?
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
You're stuck on an island, it's hot, you only have enough battery life left to listen to one song on your mp3 player. What track is it?
My song “I Won’t Forgetâ€. Wait, let me explain! It’s only because it features my Mom and hearing her voice calms my soul.
What does the next year hold for Anthony Evans?
So much! I’m writing a book, producing more tour dates with my sister and dad and releasing more music!
